IPC cancels accreditation of Russian flag waver at Paralympic opening ceremony

Xinhua, September 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has revoked the accreditation of a person who carried a Russian flag during the opening ceremony of the Rio Paralympics.

The person, who marched with the Belarus delegation at the Maracana stadium, was not an athlete or an official, the IPC said in a statement.

"The IPC on Thursday canceled the accreditation of the individual who carried the Russian flag as part of the Belarus delegation during last night's opening ceremony," the statement said.

The statement noted that the individual should not have been part of the marching party in the first place.

"As far as we are concerned this matter is now closed," the statement said.

The IPC last month suspended the Russian Paralympic Committee over its alleged failure to comply with anti-doping rules. Endit
