Gambia warns against violence ahead of poll

Xinhua, September 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

Gambia's Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on Wednesday warned against political violence ahead of the December poll in Gambia.

The IEC said in a statement that appropriate measures will be taken against those responsible for violence.

"Election results may be rigged to predetermine who will win or lose, and election may be disrupted, casting doubt on the legitimacy of the process, but ... as far as our concerted efforts are in play, this will never be the case in our dear country," said IEC Chairperson Alieu Njie.

"A free election depends on freedom of speech, assembly, association and movement without fear or intimidation," Njie said.

Momar Njai, head of the electoral commission, also promised transparent process during the election period.

Nominations are expected to take place between November 7 and 10. Endit
