Kenya's military plane tyre burst causes flight delays in Mombasa

Xinhua, September 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

A Kenyan military plane has caused flight delays at the Moi International Airport in Mombasa after it burst its tyres while taking off on Wednesday.

Military officials said that the plane burst all its tyres on the runway affecting landing and takeoff of planes at the airport.

Several passengers were stranded for hours after a number of airlines due to travel had to cancel their flights.

"Flights had been diverted to JKIA airport in Nairobi after a military plane mishap at Moi International Airport-Mombasa, Kenya Airport Authority (KAA) is conducting operation to get the aircraft off the runway," a senior Kenya Defence Force (KDF) officer said.

Reports indicate that the plane had four KDF officers on board but were not injured during incident which occurred around 10 a.m. local time.

A team from KAA and Kenya Airways engineers were mobilized with equipment and spares to carry out the task. KDF spokesman Paul Njuguna said they have launched investigation into the incident.

Kenya Airways said the incident affected its flights along Mombasa-Nairobi route due to delays. Operations went back to normalcy hours later. Endit
