Heavy rain hits southern Greece, one killed in flash flood

Xinhua, September 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

Heavy rain hit southern Greece, causing a flash flood which killed a 63-year-old woman in a village, according to the local fire brigade.

The victim had mobility problems and was using a wheelchair when she was found drowned by the flash flood by neighbors in Patima village at the outskirts of Kalamata city, some 240 km south of Athens.

The water level during the flash flood approached two meters early Wednesday, Greek national news agency AMNA reported.

Several regions of Greece face adverse weather conditions on Wednesday that have already disrupted roads, electricity supplies, and telephone connections in some cities in central, western and northern Greece.

The heavy rainfall has flooded streets and basements of houses and shops.

According to Greece's national meteorological service EMY, sporadic thunderstorms were expected until Thursday when the weather will gradually begin to improve. Endi
