Xinhua, September 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

Five Australian universities have been named as the world's top 100 best tertiary institutions in the QS World University Rankings list, which was released on Tuesday.

Heading the list was the Australian National University coming in at 22nd, followed by the University of Melbourne at 42nd, the University of Sydney at 46th, the University of New South Wales at 49th, the University of Queensland at 51st and Monash University at 65th.

British-based QS Quacquarelli Symonds, which produces the ranking, said this year's Australian universities were notable for improving their research performance, measured by the number of research paper citations achieved by a university per academic staff member.

Globally, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology topped the QS ranking, followed by Stanford and Harvard in second and third place respectively.

The QS ranking which was established in 2004 ranks university based on academic reputation (30 percent), employer reputation (20 percent) and research (10 percent).

Other factors counted in the QS ranking are the staff-student ratio (15 percent), international staff, students and exchanges (20 percent) and proportion of staff with PhDs (5 percent).

The other major global university ranking is Shanghai Ranking and the Times Higher Education which will be released later this month. Enditem
