Stays in Swiss hotels surpass 4 million mark in July: report

The Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO) reported Monday that 4.1 million overnight hotel reservations were made in July this year, down 0.4 percent from a year ago.

Figures show the number of hotel reservations made by Swiss guests increased by 1.6 percent (1.8 million stays), while bookings made by their foreign counterparts registered a 2 percent decrease, falling to 2.3 million.

According to FSO, the number of EU guests staying in Switzerland fell by 0.9 percent compared to July 2015.

The number of tourists from Asia also decreased, with a 5 percent drop in overnight hotel stays documented.

Chinese tourists in particular registered a marked decrease, with 48,000 fewer reservations recorded in the month under review.

FSO indicated that seven out of 14 Swiss tourist regions reported a drop in overnight hotel stays in July this year from the same period in 2015.

The cumulative total of hotel stays in the confederation between January and July this year stands at 20.9 million, down 1 percent compared to the same period last year. Endit
