Dubai ruler announces Jumeirah Central project as model of world cities

Xinhua, September 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

Dubai is launching Jumeirah Central, an urban mixed-use city district for 35,000 residents, the Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum announced here Saturday via a tweet.

"Jumeirah Central is part of our vision for the future of Dubai. Our goal is to be the model of world cities," said the tweet, which also showed computer renderings of the planned new "city within the city of Dubai."

Over half of Jumeirah Central will be open space, which includes an integrated network of roads for bicycles to reduce internal environment pollution, said the tweet.

The district will comprise 47 million square feet (4.3 million square kilometers) of gross floor area along Dubai's main artery street Sheikh Zayed Road and will introduce "new international standards in city planning," reported United Arab Emirates state news agency WAM.

Capable of hosting 100 million visitors per year, Jumeriah Central offers 7,200 hotel rooms, which will be the largest number of hotel rooms located in one district.

Jumeirah Central will be part of the Dubai Holding-owned Jumeirah Group, the government-controlled hospitality arm which also runs Dubai's landmark hotel Burj Al Arab, the "seven-star" hotel.

With a population of over 2.5 million, Dubai attracted 14.2 million visitors last year. It aims to host 25 million annual visitors when the city hosts the World Expo in 2020. Endit
