Afghan president heads for Uzbekistan for Karimov's funeral

Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Saturday left for Uzbekistan to take part in the funeral of late Uzbek President Islam Karimov, the country's Presidential Palace said.

Ghani left Kabul for Samarkand, Uzbekistan to attend the funeral, the palace said in a statement.

Karimov died Friday of a stroke at age 78 in the Uzbek capital of Tashkent, after 25 years of rule in the Central Asian nation since its independence.

The Afghan president has also extended his deep condolence to the Uzbek government and people while expressing sympathy to the families of Karimov, according to the statement. Enditem
