Multinational operation smashes firearm smuggling ring in Australia

Xinhua, September 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

An Australian-led multinational operation set up to target illegal gun smuggling has seized more than 300 guns and gun parts in Australia.

Even a limited illegal firearms trade posed a significant threat to safety, Australia's Justice Minister Michael Keenan said at a media conference in Melbourne on Friday.

The crackdown was triggered when Victoria Police and Australian Federal Police (AFP) identified similar assault rifles seized in three separate raids.

In conjunction with U.S. officials, Australian police were able to identify a syndicate responsible for smuggling illegal guns into Australia.

Twelve search warrants connected to the syndicate were carried out in late August, primarily in Victoria, with two men being charged for firearms offences and more than 300 guns and gun parts being seized. Endit
