Russia to lift border regime in some areas of Sakhalin region: deputy PM

Xinhua, August 31, 2016 Adjust font size:

Russia will lift its border regime in some areas of the Far Eastern Sakhalin region, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said Wednesday after a meeting of the Russian State Border Commission.

"Sakhalin has not only a unique nature, but also a unique economic resource of Russia. That's why the issue on lifting the border regime is very important," Rogozin was quoted by the Russian news agency TASS as saying.

He said it's necessary to develop tourism and business in the Sakhalin region.

"We have reached understanding with the Border Guard and the Federal Security Service," he added.

The deputy prime minister explained that a draft has been prepared and will be formalized within a month.

The entire Sakhalin Oblast and its internal and territorial waters except for Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk are considered to be the border zone, where economic activities and access are restricted. Endi
