Austrian tourism industry sees summer boom

Xinhua, August 30, 2016 Adjust font size:

The current Austrian summer tourism season is seeing a boom in both visitor numbers and overnight stays, Statistics Austria revealed on Monday.

Visitor numbers from May to July, the halfway mark of the season, have increased to 11.17 million people, a 4.2 percent year-on-year increase.

The number of overnight stays has also seen its largest increase in over 20 years, climbing 3.7 percent to reach 34.31 million.

The figures show the boom is due to increases in both foreign and domestic tourist numbers.

Overnight stays from visitors from neighboring Germany, traditionally the largest source of foreign guests, increased 6.7 percent to reach 12 million, after an already significant 6.2 percent increase in their numbers in the same category the year prior.

The main blips noticeable on the otherwise impressive season have been an 8.8 percent drop in overnight stays by Dutch visitors, another traditionally strong source of visitors, as well as a massive 19.2 percent drop in those from Russian visitors. Endit
