Three Tunisian soldiers were killed and five others wounded on Monday in a mine explosion near the border with Algeria, national TV reported.

The mine went off when a military unit was patrolling the Mount Sammama area where a major operation was under way to hunt down militants, according to the report.

Army spokesman Belhassen Ouslati confirmed that the soldiers were ambushed and that extremists opened fire on them with rifles and rocket propelled grenades. Endit
