False reports of shooting raise tension at Los Angeles airport

Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) have confirmed that reports of shots fired at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) that caused certain panic were just a false alarm.

"Report of shooting at LAX proven to be LOUD NOISES only. No shots fired; no injuries. Investigation continues to locate source," said Andy Neiman, Commanding Officer of LAPD Media Relations on his Twitter.

Police shut down parts of the airport, evacuated people and searched the airport following unconfirmed reports of a shooting at the airport facility around 9:00 p.m. (0400 GMT, Monday) on Sunday. "All precautions (are) being taken to ensure safety of public," said Los Angeles airport police.

At least four terminals at LAX were evacuated Sunday as law enforcement officials responded to what turned out to be false reports of a shooting. Terminals 4, 5, 7 and 8 were evacuated as authorities investigated multiple 911 calls of shots fired.

About one hour after the shooting reports, local police declared an "all-clear" at the airport, where there was a logjam of vehicles and there were people stranded by the evacuation of the terminals.

Police officials said all passengers needed to be re-screened through airport security before being allowed back into the terminal.

During that emergency hour, LAX sank into chaos, with people running out of terminals sometimes screaming, dozens of armed police patrolling or searching terminal by terminal.

The LAX false shooting reports this time came just days after another false alarm led to a panicked evacuation of Kennedy Airport in New York.

The Los Angeles airport had a shooting incident in November 2013, when a man opened fire in a terminal, killing a security agent and wounding three other people. Endi
