The following are news highlights in Zambia's major media outlets on Sunday.
-- The Chinese government said it is committed to actively participate in commercial operations and establishment of a revitalized Tanzania-Zambia Railways (TAZARA) with new operation and management.
Chai Zhijing, commercial counselor at the Chinese Embassy in Zambia, said in accordance with Zambian and Tanzania's requirements, the Chinese government has agreed to provide further technical support services and accessories for the revitalization and rehabilitation of TAZARA. (Zambia Daily Mail)
-- Zambia's road safety agency intends to introduce "walking" under the influence of alcohol offense for people who cause accidents because of careless walking in the streets while drunk.
The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) said the inclusion of the offense follows an amendment to the law. The agency said the amendment would compel pedestrians to take responsibility for observing traffic rules, unlike in the past where all the accident liability was attributed to motor vehicle drivers when they were not entirely to be blamed. -- The Zambian government said it intends to take serious measures against age cheating in sports.
Doris Mulenga, Ministry of Youth, Sport and Child Development Lusaka Province Coordinator, said all the athletes that will be selected to represent the country at the Africa Sports Council Region Fives Games in Angola will be subjected to the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to take place in December this year.
She said the government wants to take the problem of age cheating and doping serious so that the athletes respect the rules.
Last month, the country's under-17 national soccer team was disqualified from the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations Championship in Mauritius after two players failed an MRI test. (Zambia Daily Mail) Endit
