Gabon's poll results to be announced 72 hours after voting

Xinhua, August 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

Results of Gabon's presidential elections being held in a single round on Saturday, will be published 72 hours after the end of voting, head of the National Autonomous and Permanent Electoral Commission (CENAP) has said.

"For this year's presidential elections, CENAP has set an ambitious target of publishing results within 72 hours after the voting exercise," Rene Aboghe Ella said when he addressed the press on Thursday in the capital Libreville.

Aboghe Ella noted that the law does not stipulate a deadline for publication of official election results.

"However, we believe the deadline that could have been more reasonable would be four to five days," the electoral commission chief said.

The two main candidates are incumbent President Ali Bongo Ondimba and opposition leader Jean Ping, a former chairman of the African Union Commission.

Eight other candidates have remained in the race after the withdrawal of four others in favour of Ping. However, they have a minimal chance of winning the polls.

Ping has received backing from ex-prime minister Casimir Oye Mba, ex-head of parliament Guy Nzouba Ndama, Leon Paul Ngoulakia who is a cousin to Bongo and independent candidate Roland Desire Aba'a Minko. Endit
