Brazil's Temer says impeachment "natural thing" in democracy

Xinhua, August 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Brazil's interim President Michel Temer said on Thursday that impeachment is a natural part of democracy.

Temer, who attended a ceremony to receive the Paralympic flame, was asked whether he was nervous about the result of the impeachment process against President Dilma Rousseff.

"Impeachment is a natural thing in democracy," he said.

Rousseff, who is charged with spending without congressional approval and manipulating government accounts, was suspended in May when Vice President Temer took over office.

The impeachment trial against Rousseff began on Thursday. If found guilty, Rousseff will be removed from office while Temer will be confirmed as the new leader for the rest of her four-year term through 2018. Endi
