Some 530,000 USD stolen from Central Bank of Somalia: governor

Xinhua, August 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Some 530,000 U.S. dollars has been stolen from the Central Bank of Somalia, the bank governor Bashir Issa confirmed on Thursday.

Issa said that a senior cashier, Muhidin Mohamed Hassan, was suspected of being behind the rip-off after he replaced the dollar currency notes with fake bills.

"One of the cashiers was behind the withdrawal of the money from the bank and put fake money in the bank," the governor said.

He said security agencies had launched a manhunt for the suspects and that some of the bank staff were also being probed.

The Somali government has been plagued by financial scandals before. The incident comes ahead of the country's indirect elections due in September and October. Endit
