Resource stocks assist JSE to close higher

Xinhua, August 24, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) edged up on Tuesday, buoyed by gains in resources.

The all share index was up 0.24 percent to 52,957.80 points, with the blue-chip top 40 gaining 0.31 percent, but gold and platinum stocks lagged following a trading update by Impala Platinum, warning of weaker financial results.

Rising resource shares led gains, helping to offset 1.52 percent losses in gold miners.

Outside the resources market, corporate earnings dominated individual shares, with transport and logistics group Imperial dropping more than 4 percent while Shoprite perked up after its year-end results.

The South African rand was trading at R13.47 to the U.S. dollar, R17.72 to the British pound, and R15.24 to the euro at close of session. Endit
