Afghan refugees return from Pakistan gets momentum

The return of Afghan refugees from Pakistan has gotten momentum as up to 5,000 refugees voluntarily return home daily, a spokesman for the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation said Tuesday.

"Between 4,000 to 5,000 refugees voluntarily return to their home country Afghanistan daily," Islamudin Jurhat told Xinhua.

More than 100,000 Afghan refugees have returned home over the past one month and the number of returnees is on constant rise, the official added.

Some 300,000 Afghan refugees have returned their homeland since the beginning of 2016, Jurhat said.

Around 2.5 million Afghan refugees are presently living in Pakistan, the official said, adding out of these 1.5 million are registered refugees and the remaining are unregistered.

Each refugees after returning home receives 400 U.S. dollars from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in the Returnees Registration Center at Pul-e-Charkhi locality east of Kabul, an officer with UNHCR Fahim Satar told Xinhua. Enditem
