Jamaica formulating anti-crime measures

Xinhua, August 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

Jamaica is working on a plan to deal with the country's high crime rate, the Office of Prime Minister (OPM) said in a statement on Monday.

The plan will include a set of measures to reduce crime in both long and short terms.

The National Security Council, which is in charge of making the plan, has been meeting monthly, and is setting the coming October as the deadline for submitting the plan for cabinet approval.

The plan will focus on a wide range of areas, including violent offenses, firearms-related crimes involving the use of firearms, and lottery scamming, the OPM statement said.

The plan also seeks to expand the security forces, improve their distribution and mobility, and enhance their investigative and prosecutorial capacities, according to the OPM.

Jamaica is among countries worldwide with the highest homicide rate. With a population of less than 3 million, the country recorded 1,207 murders last year, up nearly 20 percent over that of 2014.

This year, the Caribbean island has witnessed a slight improvement in the security condition in the corporate area, but recorded even more murders than 2015 in rural parishes, according to the Jamaica Constabulary Forces. Endi
