Vintage export season expected for New Zealand winemakers

Xinhua, August 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

Exports of New Zealand wine rose 10 percent last year to hit a record value of 1.57 billion NZ dollars (1.14 billion U.S. dollars), according to an industry report out Friday.

The United States, the United Kingdom and Australia remained the three biggest markets, with Sauvignon blanc white wines making up more than 85 percent of exports, said the New Zealand Winegrowers report.

The industry was well on track to reach its target of 2 billion NZ dollars (1.45 billion U.S. dollars) of exports by 2020, New Zealand Winegrowers chair Steve Green said in a statement.

Last year was the 21st consecutive year the industry had experienced significant export growth.

"This continued strong performance is testament to underlying market and consumer demand for our wines in key markets," said Green.

With demand strong, the improved supply from the 2016 vintage was expected to lift export volumes by a further 10 percent over the next 12 months. Endit
