5 killed after speeding car crashes into tree in India

Five persons were killed Thursday after a speeding car carrying them crashed into a roadside tree in Indian state of Maharashtra, officials said.

The accident took place in Vile Parle area Mumbai city, the capital of Maharashtra.

"Four men and one young women -- all in their 20s were killed when their speeding car rammed into a tree on the Western Express Highway here," a police official posted in Mumbai said. "The accident occurred at 5:45 a.m. (local time) and all of them died on spot due to the impact of crash."

Following the accident, passersby rushed to the spot and informed police, locals said.

Police officials suspected rash driving as a reason for the accident.

Deadly road accidents are common in India often caused due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.

Last year 146,133 people were killed and 500,279 others injured in 501,423 road accidents across India, a latest report released by India's ministry of road transport said

Global Road Safety Report 2015 released by World Health Organization last year however said India accounts for more than 200,000 deaths annually due to road accidents. Endit
