German Sebastian Brendel and Lisa Carrington from New Zealand retained their titles respectively in the men's canoe single 1000m and women's kayak single 200m in the canoe sprint competition in the 2016 Olympic Games here on Tuesday.
Since his victory at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Brendel has won 17 of the 19 major races he participated in, including two wins in the world championships (2014 and 2015).
Isaquias Queiroz dos Santos from Brazil took silver, the first ever Olympic medal in a canoe sprint event for Brazil. Serghei Tarnovschi from Moldova took bronze, the first medal for Moldova in the 2016 Olympic Games.
"It was a good race that I did. Of course it comes into your mind that you may lose, but I think I was extremely well prepared. On going up to the race everything was well organized. I picked up some training yesterday and I also think I hold quite well to the pressure," said Brendel.
Lisa Carrington retained her Olympic title after winning the first ever Olympic women's kayak single 200m race in the London 2012 Olympic Games. Since that victory in 2012, Carrington has won all 13 major races in which she participated including world title in 2013, 2014 and 2015 and nine World Cups.
On winning her second successive gold medal in the women's K1 200m, Carrington said: "Every time you get on the podium it's different. I definitely felt the anomaly of the Olympics this time. It's cool to be out there while still feeling the pressure and be able to compete."
Carrington will also compete in the women's K1 500m on Wednesday. When she talked about her preparation, she said: "It's just the fact that I have to go back to my apartment and just get ready for the next day. It's fine, it's what I came for. It's nice to be halfway through the program and get the 200 done and celebrate and move on. This was the way it was always going to be. We'll see how the 500 unfolds but I'm confident I'll do my best. The 500 is a really tough event and I've got really strong competition."
Marta Walczykiewicz won a silver in the women's K1 200m, thus becoming the first Polish woman to claim a medal in an individual canoe sprint event since the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games, while Inna Osipenko-Rodomska bagged a bronze, becoming the first medalist representing Azerbaijan in any canoe sprint event.
Marcus Walz from Spain claimed a gold medal in the men's K1 1000m as Josef Dostal from Czech Republic claimed silver to win his second medal in this sport after bronze in men's kayak four 1000 in 2012. Roman Anoshkin from Russia took bronze to win the first medal for Russia in this event.
Walz felt excited about his victory. "Just incredible. I didn't even know this year if I was going to qualify to go to the Olympics. Well finally I did it. I just trained harder and harder these past months and I can't even believe it. This is incredible. I didn't even expect to be fighting for a medal. I just kept on and trained hard and believed in myself." said he.
Hungary claimed a gold medal in the women's kayak double 500m. Germany settled for a silver medal. Poland took bronze to win a medal in this event in the fifth Olympic Games in a row. Endit
