Tokyo shares open lower on weak GDP data, rising yen

Xinhua, August 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

Tokyo shares opened lower Monday on Japan's weaker-than-expected gross domestic product data for the April-June period and the stronger yen.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 42.02 points, or 0.25 percent, from Friday to 16,877.90.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 3.49 points, or 0.26 percent, to 1,319.73.

Decliners were led by pulp and paper, iron and steel, and precision instrument issues. Endit
