Morocco seizes over 1.5 tons of cannabis

Moroccan security forces have seized over 1.5 tons of cannabis in two operations, local media reported on Friday.

According to Hespress.com news site, 1.27 tons of cannabis in 51 packages were captured during a series of underwater searches, which are still underway, near the city of Kenitra, some 36 km away from the capital Rabat.

In another operation at the Moroccan Spanish border crossing point of Bab Sebta, security forces seized 240 kg of cannabis and arrested a Spaniard.

The Spanish national was driving a Spain-registered car where the illicit drug was concealed within fish containers.

An investigation into the alleged drug trafficking case has been launched.

Despite efforts in the past decade to crack down on cannabis farming, Morocco remains the world's largest producer of cannabis resin.

According to the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime's World Drug Report 2016, Morocco ranked first among 129 countries in terms of cannabis production over the period 2009-2014, followed by Afghanistan, Lebanon, India and Pakistan. Endit
