Tourist arrivals in Myanmar increases by 4 pct in first half of this year

Foreign tourist arrivals in Myanmar increased by 4 percent in the first six months of this year as compared with the same period of the previous year, official media reported Friday.

About 1.69 million tourists visited the country during the period against over 650,000 in the same period of last year.

Tourist arrivals are increasing despite the monsoon season, said U Myo Win Nyunt, director of the Department of Hotels and Tourism.

During the period, visitors from Thailand, Singapore, China and Japan took 70 percent stake while European tourists shared 30 percent.

Thai tourists stood the majority, followed by China and Japan.

Myanmar expects 5.5 million tourists arrivals this year. Endit
