Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen on Friday urged the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to return to the six-party talks in order to maintain peace and stability in the Korean peninsula, a Cambodian senior official said.
Hun Sen made the remarks during a meeting with newly-appointed DPRK Ambassador to Cambodia Jang Yun Gon, according to Kao Kim Hourn, minister attached to the prime minister.
"The prime minister had called on the DPRK to comply with all relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council and urged the resumption of the six-party talks in order to maintain peace in the Korean peninsula," Kao told reporters after the meeting.
"The prime minister underlined that what Cambodia wanted to see is peace and stability in the Korean peninsula," he said.
The six-party talks began in August 2003 as a forum focusing on the DPRK's nuclear program and were halted in April 2009 when the DPRK announced that it would no longer take part in the talks in a reaction to the international condemnation of its long range missile test.
The countries directly involved in the six-party talks are South Korea, the DPRK, China, Russia, the United States and Japan. Enditem
