Germany snatched two golds from the men's and women's quadruple sculls in the rowing regatta of the 2016 Olympics Games here on Thursday.
Germany's win in this event was a repeat of four years ago in the London Olympics. Australia took a silver medal and Estonia notched a bronze. This was Estonia's first medal of the 2016 Olympic Games, and its third Olympic rowing medal.
Germany has now won this event four times at the Olympic Games. Other times were Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and London 2012. Germany is the third NOC to successfully defend its title in men' s quadruple sculls.
As a member of German men's quadruple sculls crew, Lauritz Schoof won his second Olympic gold medal. He said: "I'm so happy that I could cry. Twice Olympic gold medal is amazing. I never imagined when I started rowing that I had such a huge chance for success."
Germany continued their strong campaign in the women's quadruple sculls to win the gold, beating the Netherlands and Poland into second and third place respectively. Thus Annekatrin Thiele from Germany finally struck gold after winning two silver medals in this boat class at the last two Olympic Games.
Meanwhile, Katherine Grainger became the first woman from Britain to win a medal at five Olympic Games when she added a fourth silver to her gold at London 2012 by finishing second in the women's double sculls with Victoria Thornley. The British duo were outsprinted by Magdalena Fularczyk-Kozlowska/Natalia Madaj from Poland in the final 500m.
Eric Murray and Hamish Bond from New Zealand defended their title in the men's pair. Behind them were Lawrence Brittain and Shaun Keeling from South Africa with a silver medal and Giovanni Abagnale/Marco Di Costanzo from Italy with a bronze.
Brothers Martin Sinkovic/Valent Sinkovic from Croatia lifted the title in the men's double sculls. Silver and bronze went to Lithuania and Norway.
In the lightweight men's four, world championship silver medalists Switzerland took the gold. Denmark and France settled for silver and bronze respectively. Endit
