Lithuania supports Turkey after attempted coup: minister

Xinhua, August 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

Lithuania strongly supports democratically elected Turkish government and wishes to express its solidarity with Turkish people, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius said on Wednesday in a meeting with Turkish Ambassador to Lithuania Aydan Yamancan.

The minister and the Turkish ambassador discussed the situation in Turkey after an attempted coup last month.

"Turkey faces some immense challenges and is currently undergoing a particularly difficult period in coping with the consequences of the failed military coup; we strongly support our ally and are ready to help," Linkevicius was quoted as saying in the ministry's statement.

He noted that coping with the consequences of the coup attempt should be "in accordance with the rule of law and international law".

Lithuania consistently supported Turkey's European integration efforts, Linkevicius added.

"As a member of NATO, Turkey plays a significant role in ensuring the transatlantic security," the minister said.

In his words, Turkey also significantly contributes to addressing key international threats such as terrorism and illegal migration. Endit
