Romanian held for hi-tech cash heist in southern India

Indian police Wednesday claimed to have arrested a Romanian national for a hi-tech heist in the southern state of Kerala and said that efforts are on to nab two other foreigners involved in the crime.

The three suspects were caught on closed-circuit TV cameras entering a number of automated teller machines of banks in Kerala's capital Thiruvananthapuram and fixing sophisticated electronic devices at the cash kiosks of different banks.

"Though the devices the trio scanned the account details and pin codes of people who went to the cash machines to withdraw money. They then used the details to produce fake cash cards to withdraw money in Mumbai and Delhi," a senior police official said.

While the Romanian national has been nabbed in Mumbai, police in Kerala are planning to approach the Interpol to help catch the other two. "We believe the two foreigners have already left India. So, we mull taking Interpol's help," he said, on condition of anonymity.

The official said that they began the probe in the case after some 22 people complained to police that large amounts of money had been withdrawn from their accounts earlier this week. "Nearly five lakh rupees (9,000 U.S. dollars) have been stolen by the three suspects," he added. Endit
