Ghana's first female Olympic swimmer wants to inspire women

Xinhua, August 10, 2016 Adjust font size:

Ghana's first female Olympic swimmer Kaya Forson says she hopes to inspire more women to take to the new sports.

The 14-year-old competed in the women's 200m freestyle and got eliminated after finishing third in her heat behind Matelia Buadromo (Fiji) and Shivani Kataria (India), who finished in 2:05.49 and 2:09.30, respectively.

She however made a personal best time of 2:16.02.

Encouraged by her performance on Monday, Forson said she was happy with the Olympic experience and promised to train hard for future events.

"I hope to inspire more women to try the new sport, try new things and go on adventure," she told reporters after the race.

"My thing was, I didn't wanna give up. I didn't wanna stop. I just wanted to go through and do the best I possibly could," she said

Ghana's Vice-President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur applauded Forson for representing Ghana at the ongoing 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil, despite failing to qualify to the next stage of the competition.

"I am very proud of Ghanaian teenage swimmer Kaya Adwoa Forson for representing Ghana well at Rio 2016," the vice-president tweeted on Tuesday. Endit
