Myanmar former ruling party to propose peace policy to upcoming peace conference

Myanmar's former ruling party, the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), is preparing to submit its peace policy to the upcoming government-led 21st Century Panglong Conference slated for the end of this month in Nay Pyi Taw.

The party's Chairman U Thein Sein, who is former president of the country, made the remarks on Monday at a workshop on national reconciliation and internal peace, according to official sources.

The USDP's stance on peace implementation will be announced at the peace conference, U Thein Sein told the workshop. He expressed hope that the peace policy will assist the country's peace process.

U Thein Sein emphasized the need of taking balanced measures while building a federal union.

Sources also said that peace initiatives yielded from the workshop will seek approval of the USDP's third nationwide party conference on Aug. 20.

Myanmar State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi on Monday announced Aug. 31 for holding the 21st Century Panglong Peace Conference in Nay Pyi Taw.

The state counselor also held a meeting with Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services Sen-Gen Min Aung Hlaing, discussing issues including ending conflicts in the country's Kachin state and Shan state-North, national reconciliation and domestic peace, rule of law and stability, as well as the upcoming Panglong Peace Conference.
