International Dota 2 Championship opens in Settle with prize pot of 20 mln USD

The main event of the International Dota 2 Championship 2016 kicked off Monday at the Key Arena in the U.S. city of Seattle, which brought the world's top Dota teams together to battle for the Champions.

Sixteen teams participated in the biggest e-sports competition of the year to compete for the massive prize pool of around 20 million U.S. dollars, which almost doubled the prize of 2014 to reach the record high in e-sports history.

Six teams were directly invited to compete in Seattle, while other teams battled through the Regional Qualifiers, in which the top two teams from each region stood out, to earn a place in the the main event running through Saturday.

After four teams competed for two wildcard spots, one of which has been occupied by Ehome from China, and all 16 teams faced off in three days of group stages, the brackets have been set for the start of the main event.

The top placing teams took eight spots in the upper bracket, and the other half filled up the lower bracket.

On the opening day, the top-seeded OG fought against MVP Phoenix in the best-of-three Upper Bracket series, followed by surging DC's taking on Wings in the other quarterfinals series of the day.

The losing teams will drop into the Lower Bracket to play again on Tuesday, while the winners will earn a day of rest before playing their Upper Bracket Semifinals matchups on Wednesday.

Dota 2 is a free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena video game developed and published by Valve Corporation.

It is played in matches between two teams that consist of five players, who each occupies their own base on the map. Each player controls a powerful character, known as a "hero," that features unique abilities and different styles of play. Endit
