The number of new cars licensed in the first seven months of 2016 in Ireland was 20 percent higher than that of the same period in 2015, according to official figures on Monday.

The figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) showed that in the first seven months of the year, 119,952 new private cars were licensed.

In July 2016 alone, 22,462 new private cars were licensed for the first time, an increase of 5.5 percent compared with July 2015, according to the CSO figures.

Hyundai was the most popular make of new private cars licensed in July, followed by Ford, Toyota, Nissan and Volkswagen. Together, these five makes represent just over half of all new private cars licensed.

In the first seven months of 2016, seven out of every ten new private cars licensed were diesel, while 96.3 percent of new private cars licensed in the same period were in the CO2 emission levels of Category A/B.

The CSO figures also showed that the number of used private cars licensed in the first seven months of the year increased by 26.9 percent compared with the same period in 2015.

A total of 5,637 used private cars were licensed in July 2016, representing a rise of 38.3 percent on the same month last year, the CSO said. Endit
