Sjostrom breaks own world record to grab 100m butterfly gold

Xinhua, August 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom smashed her own world record to clinch gold in the women's 100m butterfly final at the Rio Olympics on Sunday.

Sjostrom clocked 55.48 seconds to beat her previous mark of 55.64 set at the world championships in Kazan last year.

Canada's Penny Oleksiak took silver at Rio's Olympic Aquatics Stadium in 56.46 and the USA's Dana Vollmer grabbed bronze with a time of 56.63.

China's Lu Ying and Chen Xinyi finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Despite four world championship titles, Sjostrom had previously never won an Olympic medal. Her best finish before Sunday was fourth in this event at the London 2012 Games.

The Swede set an Olympic record in qualifying for Sunday's final with a time of 55.84. Endit
