Hsu Shu-ching of Chinese Taipei won the women's 53kg gold medal in a breathtaking weightlifting contest at the Rio Olympics on Sunday.
The 25-year-old Hsu lifted a total weight of 212kg, beating world champion Li Yajun of China.
Though leading in the snatch, Li, the winner at the national championships at 232kg, failed all three jerk attempts. The Chinese complained that she and her coaches did not know the referees had invalidated her first jerk of 123kg.
Hsu, the winner with 221kg at the world championships in 2015, secured at least a silver medal as she jerked 112kg in her first try before she failed at 126kg. Li's poor performance ensured Hsu winning Chinese Taipei's first Olympic weightlifting gold even without the last jerk.
Li, a 23-year-old Olympic debutant, challenged 104kg in the last snatch, trying to break the world record of 103kg set by her compatriot Li Ping in 2010, but failed. World champion Hsu did it on 100kg, trailing Li by one kilo.
Hidilyn Diaz of the Philippines won the silver at 200kg and the bronze went to Yoon Jin Hee of South Korea at 199kg. Enditem
