The following are news highlights in South Africa's major media outlets on Sunday.

-- Unions are concerned that a shift in political power at metropolitan municipalities after the elections could mean a purge of African National Congress(ANC)-aligned workers.

Tshwane, ohannesburg and Nelson Mandela Bay are three cities where the Democratic Alliance (DA) -- which is outspoken about the deployment of cadres into key positions for which they are not suitably qualified -- will wield more influence in the corridors of power.(Business Day)

-- The ANC garnered the most votes in Johannesburg, but still fell short of a 50 percent majority, meaning the metro would have be run through a coalition.

The metro was the last to be counted, and the release of the city's results officially brought the 2016 local government elections to a close on Saturday night. (News24)

-- In a desperate bid to hang on to power in the metros and cities that it lost in this week's elections, the ANC is dangling carrots in front of possible coalition partners.
