Car-free event launched in Singapore's Mount Faber

Xinhua, August 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

Singapore's Mount Faber Loop was turned into a car-free zone from 4:00 p.m. to 7: 00 p.m. local time on Saturday, the first time that a car-free event has been held in a park in the city state.

Entitled "Let's Lepak at Mount Faber," which means "let's hang out and relax at Mount Faber," the event attracted many residents to participate in activities related to the theme of sports and wellness, such as playing traditional games.

Low Yen Ling, mayor of Singapore's South West District, kicked off the event by joining in the new GetActive! Singapore workout.

The car-free zone was created along Mount Faber Loop's 800 meter stretch of road, from Mount Faber Park Car Park D to the junction near Faber Bistro, while the main road going up to Mount Faber from Kampong Bahru Road remained open.

The event is organized by Mount Faber Leisure Group through the "Streets for People" program, a community-initiated project of Singapore's Urban Redevelopment Authority to transform streets into meaningful public spaces.

As it's aligned towards Singapore's push to become a "car-lite" city, the event also got supports from the country's National Parks Board. Endit
