Albanian rights group raises concerns over security in Tirana airport

Xinhua, August 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Albanian Helsinki Committee (AHC), a non-official human rights group, on Friday expressed concerns about security conditions in the Tirana International Airport (TIA).

The committee pointed to police failure to identify those responsible for a robbery of approximately 1 million euros (about 1.1 million U.S. dollars) from an armored cash-transport vehicle at the Tirana International Airport more than one month after the incident.

"The robbery which was carried out within just a few minutes, by three armed and masked people, in the area of TIA where planes park, showed serious problems with security in this airport," it said in a statement.

Albanian local media reported that security problems had been found over the years in the airport.

The AHC said five airport employees have been arrested, and some officials of the Civil Aviation Authority and Ministry of Transportation are being investigated. Endi
