Cargo plane skids off runway at Italy's Bergamo airport

A cargo plane overshot the runway at Orio al Serio international airport in Bergamo, northern Italy, and ended onto a nearby road on Friday, authorities said.

No casualties were reported in the incident, which took place early Friday.

The plane, a Boeing 737 belonging to courier firm DHL, apparently skidded on the runway after landing due to bad weather conditions, Ansa news agency reported.

It smashed through the perimeter fence of the airport, and stopped with its nose onto the highway passing at the end of the runway.

The cargo flight originated from Charles De Gaulle airport in Paris, and had three crewmembers on board, all of which were uninjured, aviation officials said.

The highway was quite empty of car traffic at that early morning hour, which helped prevent possible casualties, according to local media.

The Italian National Agency for Flight Safety was immediately informed in order to investigate the causes of the incident, the Italian Civil Aviation Authority stated.

The Orio al Serio hub was closed for a few hours on Friday morning, and some flights had to be rerouted to Malpensa airport in Milan.

Up to mid-Friday, at least eight rescue teams of Italian firefighters were at work in order to secure the area, and remove the plane.

The closure of the highway where rescue teams were working, plus heavy rains, caused severe disruption to the traffic in the Lombardy region.

Low-cost Orio al Serio hub lies some 50 km northeast of Milan, and is Italy's third busiest airport by passenger traffic, with over 10 million travelers last year. Endit
