Nairobi bourse trading swells 26 pct on local investors

Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) turnover climbed 26 percent to 8.7 million U.S. dollars from 34 million shares on robust trading by local investors, whose participation stood at 48 percent Wednesday.

Safaricom, Kenya's leading telecom operator was the top mover, trading 13 million shares at 0.20 dollars, down from 20 million shares in previous session.

KenRe, in the insurance sector, was the second best mover, a surprise entrant in the top five best stocks, as it moved 8.2 million shares at 0.20 dollars.

Equity Group Holdings, under the banking category, moved 6.7 million shares at 0.38 dollars while Cooperative Bank traded 981,000 shares at 0.14 dollars to clock the fifth position.

Regional oil marketer KenolKobil under the energy category moved 1.5 million shares at 0.11 million dollars.

While foreign investors went mainly for Safaricom, KenRe and Equity Bank, local investors' interest was on KenolKobil.

The benchmark NSE 20 Share Index gained a point to settle at 3,479.75 while All Share Index, similarly, ended about a point higher to stand at 145.20.

Market capitalisation, which measures shareholders' wealth, went up slightly to stand at 21 billion U.S. dollars while at the bonds market, securities worth 11 million dollars were transacted Wednesday. Endit
