Indonesian soccer association to elect leaders after lifting of ban

Xinhua, August 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

Indonesian football association (PSSI) is to choose top officials by the year as it is striving to push for reform following the lifting of FIFA's suspension from international participation.

The association is scheduled to pick up the chairman and members of executive committee in October, said Hinca Panjaitan, acting chairman of PSSI.

The decision was made during the PSSI's extraordinary congress, which was attended by the representatives from FIFA and AFC, in Jakarta on Wednesday, the acting chairman said.

"The election is scheduled to be held on October 17, but the venue will be determined later," he said, adding a task force was set up to conduct the election.

In May, the world governing body, FIFA, lifted its sanction on Indonesia from taking part in international competitions after the government ended a freeze on the activity of the country's football association.

Indonesian Sport Minister Imam Nahrawi said that the government was optimistic that PSSI would push necessary reforms in the nation, where soccer is widely popular.

In April 2015, the sport ministry froze PSSI and the country's football competition due to violation against government regulations on football league.

FIFA issued the sanction on the reason that the government had intervened internal affairs of PSSI. Endit
