The following are news highlights in South Africa's major media outlets on Wednesday.

-- South Africans voted on Wednesday in closely contested municipal elections that could deal a heavy blow to the ruling ANC.

The party risks losing control of key cities, including Tshwane, Johannesburg and Nelson Mandela Bay, according to some polls. (Business Day)

-- Voting for the 2016 local government elections began smoothly at most stations on Wednesday.

In KwaZulu-Natal, the crowing of roosters signalled the beginning of a new day as electral body IEC staff got ready to receive voters at the Ntolwane Primary School in Nkandla. (News24)

-- Law enforcement personnel will be on high alert during Wednesday's polls, with increased personnel especially in the over 200 hotspots identified by the South African Police Service.
