Olympic torch to arrive in Rio

After travelling around the country, the Olympic torch is about to end its long pilgrimage and arrive in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday, announced Rio city mayor Eduardo Paes here on Tuesday.
"It is time to realize that what is happening in Rio will not be repeated for a few generations, and that never happened in the history of South America. It is a very special moment in the history of our country and our city," said Paes.
Before lightening up the Olympic pyre on August 5, the flame will spend 3 days going through key locations in the city and nearby areas, sharing its warmth with the public at major touristic attractions.
About 600 people will participate in the torch relay, which will travel 90 kilometers from the city until Friday.
The list of bearers include celebrities from music, sport, literature, art and medicine among which are actresses Cica Guimaraes and Sheron Menezes, singers Dudu Nobre.
"It is worth any effort so that we can show the world that Rio is a very special place, that Brazil is a very special place, we have a unique people," added Paes.
According to Paes, the torch is not confined to the elite. People from all walks of life, who incorporate the spirit of being carioca will have the chance to represent their city.
" When you drive the torch, people want to feel love, affection and passion for Rio. That the torch relay transmit peace, we can be Cariocas firmly. I'll run so slowly that I will do my 200 meters turn one day," added Paes.
The torch relay starts on August 3 when Paes will receive this major Olympic symbol at Escola Naval. Endit
