Five people were killed in a fatal bus crash in the U.S. state of California early Tuesday, local authority said.

A charter bus heading form South California to the north crashed into a sign pole about 3:35 a.m. local time on Highway 99 in Merced County, said the California Highway Patrol.

About 30 passengers were aboard when the accident occurred, said the California Highway Patrol officer Moises Onsurez, adding that among them five people were transported to local hospitals.

The driver of the bus was identified by police as Mario David Vasquez, 57, of the Los Angeles area. He suffered major injuries in the crash and was in a crucial condition.

All of the survivors had been removed from the vehicle around at 8 a.m., the authority said.
