Portugal's wine production to drop 20 percent in 2016

Xinhua, August 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

Portugal's wine production is expected to fall by up to 20 percent this year, according to the Portuguese Institute of Vine and Wine.

Portugal's total wine production this year will reach 5.6 million hectolitres, according to a statement released by the institute on Tuesday.

There will be a drop in production across all regions, except for the Algarve in southern Portugal where production levels are expected to be the same as last year.

The most affected regions will be Lisbon, Tras-os-Montes, Douro and the Azores islands, which will see a reduction of around 25 percent.

The main cause of this loss is climate conditions.

Last year Portugal produced over 7 million hectolitres of wine, 13 percent more than that in the previous year, and was the world's ninth major exporter. Endit
