Fiji's Disability Bill 2016 to be enacted as law

Fiji's National Council for Disabled Persons is hopeful that Disability Bill 2016 will be enacted as law next month, which will be a first for the Pacific island nation, the government-owned Fiji Broadcasting Corporation confirmed Tuesday.

The Disability Bill, which captures a number of features of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, has already been presented in parliament, said Sitiveni Yanuyanutawa, executive director of the council.

The bill also provides persons with disabilities, both within and outside the home, the right to protection from all forms of exploitation, violence and abuse including gender-based violence, said Yanuyanutawa.

Approved by the country's cabinet, the Fiji National Council for Disabled Persons was established in 1992 as the central authority and the national coordinating body for disability development in the Pacific island nation. Endit
