Police injured in blast in Kenya's coastal region

A police officer and a government worker were on Monday injured after they stepped on an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in the coastal town of Lamu.

The two are an Administration Police officer and a National Youth Service machine operator. The IED was believed to be planted by the Somalia-based Al-Shabaab militant group, which has staged a series of attacks in Kenya in recent years.

The two were among a group of multi-agency team constructing perimeter wall along the Kenya-Somalia border within Usalama area in Lamu East. They are receiving treatment in a local hospital, Lamu County Commissioner Joseph Kanyiri said.

"The wall is very crucial in curbing Al-Shabaab threats in the region. The militants have planted IEDs to disrupt the exercise but we will not relent until the wall is fully constructed." said regional police commander Francis Wanjohi.

Police and military sources indicate Al-Shabaab militants have changed tactics by using IEDs to carry out ambush targeting security agents mostly in northeastern Kenya.

Recently, at least five Kenya Defence Forces soldiers were injured after their military tanker hit an IED in Lamu East. Endit
