Police stop bus on Dutch highway after man alledgedly makes bomb remark

Xinhua, August 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

Dutch police arrested a man who alledgedly made a remark about a "bomb" in a bus on the A4 highway near Amsterdam on Monday.

The police received a call from a passenger of the bus on Monday morning that a male suspect had made "strange remarks, containing the word bomb", the police said in a statement.

The bus driver had put the bus on the side of the highway, after which the passengers got out of the bus and the suspect was arrested. According to the police the man seemed confused and said he did not mean to cause any trouble.

Examination of the bus did not disclose any dangerous material. After a stop of around one and a half hour the passengers got in the bus again and the bus driver continued his way to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.

The highway to Schiphol was temporarily closed due to the situation with the bus and caused extra traffic jams. This delay came on top of the busy days around Amsterdam Schiphol airport due to security checks by the Dutch military police.

Due to a terror threat signal the Dutch military police started with extra security checks on Saturday morning on the roads towards the airport, with traffic being stopped and examined. The measures are still in force and still cause traffic delay. In addition to these measures, various invisible measures have been put in place as well.

The municipality of Haarlemmermeer, of which Schiphol Airport is part of, took the extra measures in consultation with the Dutch National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism (NCTV). The additional security measures have been put in place to prioritize the safety and security of both passengers and employees.

The signal suits the current threat level of substantial in the Netherlands. The respective parties did not give away any details on the terror threat signal. Endit
