The UN under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs, Stephen O'Brien, will visit South Sudan on Aug. 1-3 to see at first hand the humanitarian situation and call for urgent action to alleviate suffering in the world's youngest country, the United Nations announced here Friday.

During the three-day mission, O'Brien is expected to meet with people affected by the humanitarian crisis, senior government officials and humanitarian partners, Farhan Haq, the deputy UN spokesman, said at a daily news briefing here. (UN-South Sudan)

LOS ANGELES -- San Diego Police Department confirmed at a conference Friday that one of the two police officers shot late Thursday night was dead and the other was expected to survive.

MOGADISHU -- The UN humanitarian agency said attacks on aid workers delivering supplies in Somalia almost doubled and left five dead in the first half of 2016.

The UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in its latest report launched on Friday that more than 80 security related incidents with direct impact on humanitarian organizations were recorded in the first half of this year, which were more than half of incidents reported in the whole of 2015. ANKARA -- Five soldiers were killed and eight others wounded by outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) militants attacks on a security checkpoint in the southeastern Turkish province of Hakkari, Dogan News Agency reported.

TEHRAN -- UN special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura will visit Tehran on Sunday for talks with senior Iranian officials on Syria, state-owned Press TV reported on Friday.
